Faculty

Dianne Braden received a BFA degree in Dance from Texas Christian University, and has done graduate work in dance at American University. She has performed with the Fort Worth Civic Ballet and with the Jan Taylor Dance Company in Washington, D.C. Miss Braden brings her widely recognized strengths in tap and jazz to the faculty and is a founding member of The Center Dance Company. Her choreography has been featured in several Center Dance Company concerts.

Carolyn Carratini is responsible for curriculum, school development, and RAD exam preparation. She is a former professional dancer who has danced and taught for over 30 years internationally. She has performed with The Australian Ballet, the Frankfurt Ballett-Buhne (Germany), Tasmanian Ballet, Dance Company New South Wales (now the Sydney Dance Company), Dance Concert Character Company (Australia), Northside Ballet Company (Sydney), and the Sacramento Ballet (California). Her repertoire included Raymonda, Carmen, Paquita, Pineapple Poll, Coppelia, and various works by modern choreographers. Mrs. Carattini holds a Master's degree in Dance Education from Stanford University , and a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) in Ballet and Contextual Studies from the University of Durham, England. Mrs. Carattini holds the RAD's ballet Teaching Diploma (Distinction) and is a registered teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance. Mrs. Carattini is concurrently a Practical Teaching Supervisor for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Ballet Education degree program.
Carmen Perez Carlson began her training with the Ballet of Santiago, Chile.  She continued her studies with Ivan Nagy, Julia Prokofieva, and Alicia Targarona. As a soloist of the Ballet of Santiago, she was awarded the Medal of Outstanding National Talent.  Ms. Perez-Carlson was the Silver Medalist of the Latino- American Ballet Competition and was a Semi-Finalist at the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi.  She has danced with the Tulsa Ballet Theatre, Dallas Ballet and with Ballet Dallas.
Shu-Chen Cuff was born and raised in Taiwan, where she studied with the Tsoying Dance Division in Kaoshiung, Taiwan's highly respected performing arts school. After relocating to the United States, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida's New World School of the Arts (NWSA) where she graduated on the Dean's list with honors. She has also studied at the Hartford Ballet and the Miami Ballet. Ms. Cuff performed several years at the International Dance Festival in Taiwan, Japan, and Malaysia. She has performed professionally with the Miami Ballet (1996-1998), the Nevada Ballet Theater, NBT (199 8-2002), and Dana Tai Soon Burgess and Company (2003-Present). Her performances include In the Glow of the Night, Les Sylphides, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Coppelia, Dracula, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Don Quixote, Tracings, and other classical and contemporary pieces. She has performed extensively throughout the United States, Asia, Central America, and Europe. She has taught at several dance schools in Taiwan including the renowned Tsoying Dance School. In the United States, Ms. Cuff taught at the Nevada Ballet Academy prior to joining the faculty at Arlington Center for Dance in the spring of 2002. She currently performs professionally with Dana Tai Soon Burgess and Company.
Desirée Di Mauro holds degrees in Biology and Environmental Management from the College of William and Mary and Duke University. She had an area of concentration in dance technique and choreography at William and Mary, and studied at the American Dance Festival (Durham, N.C.), University of Bonn (Germany),and with Lynn Simonson and Michael Geiger in New York City. Ms. Di Mauro has taught jazz and modern in several schools in the Washington, D.C. area.
Jackie Doherty is from England where she trained at Bush Davies and London Studio Center. Her performing career started in Israel as a soloist with the Israeli Ballet Company where she toured extensively throughout Israel and Europe. She also danced with the Cwmni Ballet Gwent, Classical Productions and Opera North in the UK. She started teaching ballet when she arrived in the US initially teaching in California. She has recently moved to Virginia as of January 2007 and looks forward to pursuing her teaching here on the East Coast.
Rebecca Erhart trained at the Contra Costa Ballet Centre, the School of American Ballet, Miami City Ballet School, and Alonzo King's LINES Ballet School. She received her bachelor's degree in ballet from Indiana University. She has performed with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Company C Contemporary Ballet, and Cincinnati Ballet. A 2003 Princess Grace nominee, Ms. Erhart continues her performing career this season with the Washington Ballet.
Kathryn Fredgren founded Arlington Center for Dance together with her husband Kenneth in 1981. In 2002, the Fredgrens retired from running ACD, but Mrs. Fredgren continues to teach as time permits. Mrs. Fredgren is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a BFA in ballet. She is widely known for the dynamic works she has created for the Center Dance Company, for her infectious energy, and for her strong technique, which she brings to her teaching both at the studio and at local schools.

Breena Grimes comes to us from Clovis , California. She has a BA in Dance Education from Brigham Young University. She has studied jazz, modern, creative movement, ballet and grew up dancing in pep and cheer. She not only has taught dance for many years, but also has experience in choreography and has performed as a member of the university's modern dance company throughout South America , Asia and the United States. She recently returned from Mexico where she had a memorable experience teaching children creative dance. Her other loves are spending time with her husband and photography.

Tiffany Haughn has been teaching Modern, Ballet, and Jazz dance for twelve years. She graduated magna cum laude with departmental and university honors from Jacksonville University (Jacksonville, Florida) with a B.F.A. in dance and a B.A. in psychology. Ms. Haughn then went on to perform in New York City with The Lindt International Ballet, Saltare Dance Company, Jennifer Walker & Company, and Threshold Dance Company. In New York, her choreography was presented at Dance Space Center, The Bridge, and New Dance Group Arts Center. Ms. Haughn earned her Masters of Fine Arts degree in dance at George Mason University. She has been on the faculty of George Mason University, Florida Community College of Jacksonville, Episcopal High School, Levine School of Music, and The Virginia Ballet Company. Ms. Haughn is currently teaching dance at George Washington University, Northern Virginia Community College, Arlington Center for Dance, Ballet Royale Institute, and Flint Hill School.

Alexa Kane holds a BA in Art History and an MT in Elementary Education from the University of Virginia. She began her ballet training here in Northern Virginia and has been dancing for more than twenty years. During her four years at UVa, she taught ballet to students ranging in age from three to nine. She also choreographed and performed with the student-run Virginia Dance Company and currently teaches kindergarten in Fairfax County.
Karen Lewis studied ballet under Elan Diehl Cooper with the Arlington Youth Ballet, under Maureen Basta with the Washington School of Ballet, and at Maryland Youth Ballet. Her training continued in college, and she has been a student of Leigh Ann Tahash for the last several years.
Lynne Mulligan studied dance, drama and voice at Laine Theatre Arts, Epsom, Surrey, England, a professional theatrical school. She received a teaching diploma from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) upon graduating from Laine.  Ms. Mulligan has extensive professional experience in the U.S. and England as a dancer, choreographer and teacher of ballet, modern and jazz.
Stefan Sittig was born in Washington, D.C., is half-Uruguayan and was raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His choreography has been seen off-Broadway, internationally in Canada and Uruguay, and at several regional theatres in Washington, DC, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. He has trained in jazz, tap, musical theatre, and modern dance with Sharon Kinney, an original member of the first Paul Taylor Dance Company, Colleen Kelly, Melanie Richards, Judith Steel, Audrey Jung, Jack Donahue, Toni Lombre, fellow Arlington Center for Dance faculty member Maria Watson, and Doug Yeuell. Before turning his attention to teaching and choreography, Stefan performed for several regional theatres including The Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre, Olney Theatre, Studio Theatre, Theatre Virginia, Theatre IV, The Barksdale Theatre, and Heritage Repertory Theatre. He has also danced with Crossroads Dance Project, Momentum Dance Theatre, The Center Dance Company, and Maria Watson's Dance This! He is co-founder and choreographer of True To Form, an annual dance showcase that has been promoting the work of emerging DC choreographers since 2003. Stefan holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and is an Associate Member of the Society of Stage Directors & Choreographers. Kimberly Bumbaugh Swartz holds a BA in Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and an MFA in Dance from George Mason University, where she received the George Mason Dance Fellowship award. Her more than twenty years of dance training, performing, and teaching began in Pennsylvania, where she went on to study dance at the Point Park Conservatory of Performing Arts under Judith Leifer-Bentz. While at Penn State, Ms. Swartz studied ballet under Patricia Heigle-Tanner. Ms. Swartz has taught and choreographed for the past 14 years in numerous schools and universities throughout Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington D.C., including Wilson College, George Mason University, and The Catholic University, and has performed in a multitude of works both with performing groups and as a guest artist. She has danced in the works of professional choreographers, including Doug Varone, Danny Buraczeski and Mark Morris.
Caroline Frankil Warren holds a B.S. in Dance from Skidmore College, where she studied with Elizabeth Carroll and Joseph Giacobbe. She began her ballet studies on a Ford Foundation scholarship at the School of the Pennsylvania Ballet, and also studied at the City Center Joffrey Ballet and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Ms. Warren has performed as a soloist with the Delta Festival Ballet of New Orleans, the New Orleans Opera, and for the Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre. She served on the faculty of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, and as an artist-in-residence for both the New Orleans Public Schools and the Avoyelles Parish Summer Arts Program. She was selected as a delegate to the Lousiana Heritage Conference, and was included on the Artist's Roster by the Louisiana Commission on the Arts. Ms. Warren served a choreographic internship with the Joffrey Ballet, acted as repetitrice for the Delta Festival Ballet, and has choreographed locally for the Fairfax Ballet Company.
Maria Watson is a professional theatre-director, choreographer and dancer. A New York City-based dancer and actor for 15 years, Ms. Watson studied with Ann Reinking, Chet Walker, Tony Stevens, and Chris Chadman. Ms. Watson was classically trained at the Washington School of Ballet, North Carolina School of the Arts, and in New York. Also in NYC, she studied directing with Tony Award-wining director Vivian Matalon and at the Acting Studio with James Price. She has been Artistic Director of the Mohawk Theatre Guild in Massachusetts and Millbrook Playhouse in Pennsylvania, both professional theatre companies. For the past 8 summers, she has been Director/Choreographer at the Forestburgh Playhouse in New York. Ms. Watson's professional jazz-dance company will debut this November at Joy of Motion in Washington DC. Ms Watson is the head of the dance department at Georgetown Day High School and on faculty at Arlington Center for Dance.
Paul Wegner received his bachelor's degree cum laude from the University of Maryland. After training with Thomas Hanner, as well as under full scholarship with the Pennsylvania Ballet School, School of Richmond Ballet and Nutmeg Ballet, Mr. Wegner went on to dance professionally for several years with Charleston Ballet Theatre and to guest with Tampa Ballet, Buffalo Ballet Theatre and Ft. Wayne Ballet. Since retiring from the stage over ten years ago, he has worked as a full-time ballet instructor. Mr. Wegner has choreographed several pieces for the Center Dance Company and has had his photography published in Dance Magazine and Pointe Magazine.
Harriet Williams is a graduate of the University of Richmond.  She trained at the Richmond Academy of Ballet and was a leading dancer with the Virginia Ballet Theatre. Ms. Williams is a faculty member at The Academy of the Maryland Youth Ballet and has taught at Randolph-Macon College, George Washington University, Dance Place, and Dance Downtown.  She has choreographed for a number of regional companies and performed for many seasons with Perlo/Bloom and Company.
Nancie Woods is from England, where she trained at the Elmhurst Ballet School and the Rambert Academy in London. Ms. Woods holds the Advanced Certificate from the Royal Academy of Dancing. Her performing career began in France with the Ballet du Rhin, where she toured extensively throughout Europe. Ms. Woods is a former soloist with Dallas Ballet and Ballet Oklahoma, and has appeared as principal with the Santa Fe Opera. Her diverse repertoire includes works by Bournonville, Balanchine, Limon, Ailey, and many of the full length classics. Ms. Woods previously taught at the Dallas Ballet Academy and the School of Ballet Oklahoma. She has choreographed and staged numerous works for the Center Dance Company, including Les Sylphides, Act II of Giselle, Act II of the Nutcracker, and Paquita. Following the retirement of Kathryn Fredgren, company co-founder, in the fall of 2002, Ms. Woods became the Artistic Director after having served on the Arlington Center for Dance faculty for 11 years. She is married to architect Paul Solon and has twin daughters, Amelia and Maria.
